San Pedro and Caye Caulker

San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), although frequently called an “island” or “caye”, is actually the southern portion of a peninsula coming down from Mexico to the north. The Great Barrier Reef is almost at the water’s edge on the eastern side. Mostly developed, only small portions of natural vegetation remain on the southern section of San Pedro. The large Bacalar Chico National Park is a sizable reserve at the northern end. Caye Caulker is a true island and good portions of natural vegetation remain on both ends of the island. Three main habitats can be found on these two sites. These are:

  1. Urban Coastline
  2. Mangrove/Littoral Forest
  3. Lowland Dry Broadleaf Forest

San Pedro Town and Caye Caulker Town are both good sized towns with between 2,000 to 3,500 residents and serve as the main hub for business on these two locations.
